Sometime in the early 2000s — in the days before we could record video with our cell phones, my wife got me a video camera for Christmas. I was so enamored with this toy, I took it around with me everywhere (much to the embarrassment of my friends), and recorded everything that happened in my life.

At the end of the year, I edited the endless hours of tapes down to a single video in which I told the story of that year and how I had evolved. I burned it onto DVD and mailed it out to friends and family as a sort of Christmas card (this was pre-YouTube).

I had no idea how much people would enjoy this video. I even had complete strangers find me years later telling me their friend shared this video with them, and they really wanted to know more!

The experience taught me several fundamental techniques in storytelling which I’ve developed further over the years and have since applied to my writing.

If you want to hook your audience, try incorporating these tips into your storytelling
