The Key to Defeating Trolls

Once you understand this, they will never be able to rattle you

A troll is somebody who tries to disrupt an interaction, rather than have an actual exchange.

They implicitly acknowledge that you have the upper hand, and the only thing they can do is try to cause you to give up your high ground by upsetting you. In other words, they are losers that can’t win on merit, so all they can do is drag you down.

What is a troll?

To be clear, a troll is not somebody who simply says something you disagree with.

Why do people troll?

As stated above, trolling is a strategy. But let’s try to get to the heart of the matter.

Don’t give trolls oxygen, don’t engage with them to create heat, and don’t give them fuel to ignite, and they’ll burn out quickly.

That’s trolling, more or less. Since they can’t enjoy the event, they want to ruin it for everyone else.

Decrease Attack Surface Area

If a burglar drives by your house and sees that it is well lit and there’s a Ring doorbell (or other security measures), they’ll almost certainly pass your house for an easier target.

Always Maintain Control

No matter what, do not give the troll an inch. Since the name of their game is to knock you off yours, never show any weakness. Never let them know that what they are doing is affecting you (even if it is).

Snuff out the fire

A fire needs three things to burn. Oxygen, heat and fuel. Take one of them away and it dies. Don’t give trolls oxygen, don’t engage with them to create heat, and don’t give them fuel to ignite, and they’ll burn out quickly.
