They’ve gone from hiding their true fascist intent (keeping their KKK sheets in the closet) to bringing it out in the open. And the bridge between the two are these “jokes”. If they say something that backfires it’s an easy backpedal: “Oh, I was just joking! It’s a joke. Stop being so sensitive, snowflakes!”

And then free speech is under attack and yada yada yada. Yeah, I know their playbook.
