Why RUSH Became The Soundtrack Of My Life

“Hey dude, I hope everything’s well. I’ve got some more music for you,” Ken’s voice rang out from my cassette player on that chilly fall day of 1989.

Ever since he moved up to the Bay Area the year before, my friend would send tapes in the mail to me. It was a great outlet for him to talk, offer encouragement, and share the music he felt I should know. Every week, he’d introduce me to The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Aerosmith, and more. This was my musical education.

I certainly needed it. With Ken gone, I found myself completely lost and alone. High school was a cruel joke for those of us who didn’t fit in.

What can this thing be that I found?

“Here’s another song,” Ken announced. “It’s by a band called Rush, and it’s a song about a car, this is Red Barchetta.

The next six minutes and six seconds made such an impression on me, I could almost feel my world shift. I never heard anything like this before.

The power of those drums! That droning rhythm! That musicianship! I listened to that song over and over again that day. And the next day, it was the only thing on my mind. As…
