I’ve spent a long time thinking about this, as it sounds like you and I may come from similar backgrounds — or at least in a position to understand this.

Coincidentally, I published an article yesterday which also connects selfishness as a survival mechanism, when a child is neglected. No doubt self esteem, neglect and selfishness are all connected.
